Heidi Hopp in Balboa Park Monday October 26th

Join Heidi as she travels around Balboa Park to some of her favorite spots to photograph couples and individuals. Class time will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. during early afternoon lighting conditions. See how Heidi finds great lighting and shows off her posing skills to obtain beautiful images that will impress both clients and judges alike. See how Heidi uses available light, reflectors, a flashlight and on camera flash under different lighting conditions and how to choose which for each situation.

Professionally photographing since 1986, Heidi has used her 23 years of experience to educate herself in all forms of photography. Having received an A.A. in Photography from Palomar College, she joined PPSDC, PPC and PPA about 10 years later and took many of the seminars and classes to broaden her talents in portraiture, her true love.

Heidi received her PPA Certification in 2000 and later received her Fellowship and Service Awards from PPSDC. She is a Past President of PPSDC. Heidi has also won PPSDC’s Wedding Album Photographer of the Year for the past three years.

Heidi owned and operated a commercial studio in Downtown Vista from 1994 until 2001. Wanting to spend more time at home and having a built-in landscape for children’s photography, she purchased a home with 1/3 acre of property in the Lake Hodges area of Escondido in 2001 and began her journey as a home studio photographer. Her specialty of wedding photography has been joined by her much acclaimed baby and pregnancy photography, as well as becoming one of Escondido’s high school senior portrait photographers.

All The World is a Studio…

San Diego Photographers! Septembers Monthly meeting speaker is Michael Taylor

Speaker: Michael Taylor
When: Tuesday 10-13-09 @ 6:30 PM
Where: Holiday Inn
3805 Murphy Canyon Road San Diego, CA 92123
Price: Member Benefit. Non-Members $20

Michael Taylor’s passion in portrait photography is the location portrait. This has been the centerpiece of his style since his days as a graduate of Brooks Institute. This style was developed by his work with Paul Skipworth and Skipworth studios. Paul Skipworth himself was greatly influenced by the grand American portrait lineage of Bacharach and Gittings. In this same manner, Michael Taylor works to tell a story about his subject through the use of location and environment.

Through the use of his concept of wall of light to the idea of great lighting from nine to five Michael will greatly expand the WAY and the WHERE you will be able to work to create great images no matter if you are a portrait, wedding or commercial shooter. Through talking about the concepts of contrast, texture, and other visual characteristics he will help to understand how you bring excitement into your image making. Through coming to this seminar YOU WILL better understand what you need to look for to either find or create situations that will make you a better image maker…NOT A LUCKY image taker.

Don't you want to learn how to make images that are great BEFORE the photoshop fix-it.

First print competition of the year

Hello PPSDC

Last nights Print Competition was a great success. We had 35 prints entered for our judges to opinionate over. They did a wonderful job of critiquing the images and gave good explanations for their scoring. Special thanks to Blu Cotton, Janel Pahl and Frank Salas for coming down from Orange County, it is a long day for them.
We had a special guest named Ken Sklute who filled in as an alternate judge, are we lucky or what? Doyle Terry and Wendy Porter Francis rounded out the panel and showed those Orange County big wigs we have great judges here in San Diego. A new twist to our Print Competition set up by the wonderful Debbie Brackmann is that the Moderator will be the same person for the entire year. Roger Daines will be able to keep the competitions consistent and running smoothly, he knows his Print Comp rules. Behind the scene we found Kathy Chin, Lori Lethcoe and Lori Unruh working hard to get those prints in front of the judges, they did a great job! Thank you to all that participated, without your entries we have nothing. Keep entering and learning, we do this for you!!

Award winning photographer Kevin M. Connors has been creating images for more than 25 years. From his days as a teenager in his basement working in a traditional darkroom, to today using the best in digital technology to create fine art prints 60 inches and larger, Kevin has always believed in the concept of realizing artistic vision and furthering craft by being the only one involved in the entire process. Rather than relegate certain steps in the artistic process to others for retouching, artwork, and printing, all of his images are personally hand crafted from beginning to end using time-honored traditions and the latest technologies, and hand printed by Kevin himself on only the finest papers that last for centuries. To see more of his work, please visit his gallery and studio on Cedros Avenue in beautiful Solana Beach, California, or visit his web site at www.coasthighwayphoto.com.

Back To The Future:
The Digital Studio from Art to Zen

With the advent of new technology for the capturing, processing, enhancing, and printing of photographic images has come a Back To The Future effect for those studios who are embracing the idea of “printing their own.” Seventy-five years ago, there were no labs or other professional services as there are today, so photographers had to do everything in-house, from shooting, to developing, to selling, to ultimately printing images for their clients. Thanks to the constantly evolving world of digital, photographers, as artists realizing their vision from beginning to end, are able to create beautiful works of art that will last for centuries and provide opportunities for growth, profitability, and the pure pleasure derived from “sustainable” creativity. Oh, and it’s profitable too!

This workshop will provide the information you need to create a high end wedding and portrait business specializing in in-house printing on fine art papers that command much higher prices and are seen by clients through a more artistic prism. With detailed discussions of the art, craft, and business of such a business, along with a dash of zen, you’ll have a solid foundation from which to create your own Back To The Future experience. We’ll also discuss how to position and price fine art prints to increase studio profitability.

After the class we will meet down at the beach for a family portrait session with Kevin.
